Home Work Hut Tutoring Program

Louisiana houses more inmates than China and has the highest incarceration rate in the United States. Studies show that the best time frame for juvenile diversion is at the elementary level. Homework Hut Tutoring is a juvenile diversion program. This program caters to the students of Emily C. Watkins Elementary School and West St. John Elementary School. We are committed to providing our students with every opportunity to academically succeed. Partnering with St. John the Baptist School Board and District Attorney Tom Bailey, we plan to impact these students and show the importance of education. This year, our program has gotten off to a great start by tutoring 40 children. In the Home Work hut located at West St. John Elementary School are currently tutoring 18 students. At the LaPlace Housing Authority site, we are currently tutoring 22 students. We have employed three teachers at the West St. John Elementary School site. At the St. John Housing Authority site, we have employed three teachers and one teacher’s aide. The program is held every Monday through Thursday starting at 4 p.m. The students are provided with a healthy snack box and then proceed onto their lessons until 5:30 p.m. We have gotten off to a great start and strive for great results in the students’ lives
